Power Question

Over the years of using different cameras I have found I prefer the cameras that don't have pro priority batteries and use standard AA or CRV-3 type batteries. I have also found that I favor CRV-3 over standard non rechargeable AA batteries. But I have realized that CRV-3 batteries as good as they are are expensive, and the new Low Discharge batteries which have come in to great favor in the photography world is the way to go. Most of these can be charged at least 1,000 times if properly cared for. That means a modern high tech charger which is capable of testing, discharging and conditioning these batteries. I knew that the initial outlay would be expensive, but I had to do it. I ordered a La Crosse BC-900 charger that has a LCD screen for each battery and hold 4 batteries. Each battery is a separate identity and can be charged at different rates. I also purchased 4 Ansmann 2100mph low discharge batteries and a set of 4 Kodak 2100mah low discharge batteries. These new batteries maintain 85% of their charge even after a year on the shelf, so I will always have a charged set waiting to install as needed.

Todays thoughts of products received

Today I received the LumiQuest Soft Screen and tried it out for a few quick shots and found it to work very well. Below is an unprocessed image just for an idea of how it works. The unit did need a drop of trimming to fit in the hotshoe of my camera.

I also received Trek-Tech MagMount and was totaly amazed how strong this magnet is, I had to really force it to remove the camera from the mount. I wish I had found this before I went through all the other mounts. It is very well made and should perform well for a long time.

On another subject, the Tamrac Velocity 8 Sling Pack and my Monopod and the mounts I made for the pack to carry the monopod. Below is a photo of the straps I made from parts bought at my local Eastern Mountain Sports shop. The simple thing cost $4.00 US.
Today I ordered a pouch to connect to my Tamrac Velocity 8 which will carry my Archos 504 and a few other items. I should have it within a week.

Traveling & weight

I can't tell you how much money is wasted on equipment because after receiving it you find out it makes your kit way to heavy. One case in particular comes to mind. I purchased a Benro #66 Carbon Fiber monopod which I like very much. I then purchased and inexpensive Giottos ballhead model MH1304-110c and a cheap plastic quick release. After using it for a while I realized the head and release was to weak for practical use. I was supplied another ball head to try, but this was way to heavy, but great for a tripod. I now ordered a Trek-Tech MagMount head with both light and heavy duty magnets. I am hoping that this unit will be acceptable.

My next item to talk about is how the on-board flash of my K100D Super creates photos with lots of shadows and uneven exposure. I tried using only available light, but didn't approve of the color cast of the photos. I decided to purchase Lumiquest Soft Screen from Adorama which should even out the lighting.

Dicain Vertical Shutter release and grip review

Dicain SG-II Vertical Shutter Release and grip

Many of us purchased our Pentax K100D or K100D Super not only because of the image quality and the reach feature set, but for its size. I preferred a camera that was lighter and easy to carry rather than one of those over sized DSLR's. Soon after getting this camera and getting accustomed to it, I realized that shooting in the portrait position was not only strange but very uncomfortable. I realized now that the extra shutter button and the extra size were very important, and I would not be happy without these items. I also found out that compact size and weight makes a difference when shooting with a long lens and slower shutter speeds. So I was at a cross roads and had to either change cameras which I couldn’t afford, or find a Vertical Shutter release that would work with the K100D Super. After doing a bunch of searches on the Internet I found a few alternatives, but none suited my needs. One contained a battery but no shutter release and another contained both, but was a strange device that fit under the camera and had two exposed wires that plugged into the two jacks on the left of the camera. That was out of the question for both esthetic and practical reasons. The main concern was the door on the camera being to vulnerable to damage when hanging open. While doing my searches I remembered that Dicain (www.dicain.co.kr) made one for the *ist DS series, so I contacted them to ask if one was in the works. I was informed that there was, but it was a few months off. Remembering that Dicain made the cover for my LCD and I was extremely happy with its quality I decided to wait for there version of the vertical shutter release. I have now received the Dicain unit and my impressions are below.

General Information for Dicain SG-II

5.03” Wide (128mm)

2.87” Deep (73mm)

1.53” high (39mm)

3.99 ounces (113g)

First Impressions

My first impressions were that the grip is made out of a good quality material and that the color and texture is a very good match to the finish of the K100D. Even the leather grain looks very good. All in all it looks and feels good and sturdy. The grip adds no real weight to the camera, but does make it feel great in my hands.

Product Review

The unit comes in two pieces, the main unit or grip, and a piece with two male plugs that I call the bridge. The grip installs on the camera to the tripod socket using a thumb wheel which works very well. The main unit or grip contains the button for auto focus and shutter release which works just like the shutter release on the K100D or K100D Super. Half press starts auto focus and full press releases the shutter. In order for the shutter release to work on the grip, the bridge containing the plugs most be inserted. The bridge goes between the remote shutter release jack behind the door on the left of the camera, and the jack on the grip. The bridge completes the circuit between the camera and the grips shutter release. Some people might say why not do it the same way as the SG-1 grip for the *ist DS? The answer is very logical and simple! When the bridge is removed it allows access to the power jack and more important the USB jack. To me this is very important as I use the USB jack as my method to unload photos from the K100D Super. The bridge also covers and protects the door which is exposed to damage as on the Owner User grip. The bridge can be removed when not needed, for those that prefer the grip to remain on the camera and give the pro look.

Pros:

  1. Increases the size of camera for better grip.
  2. Duplicates the shutter release for portrait orientation.
  3. Allows access to both power and USB connection without removing grip.
  4. The door that covers ports is protected from damage.
  5. Duplicates the tripod socket on the camera.
  6. Fits snugly to camera.
  7. Matches camera finish very well.
  8. Has two mounts for camera strap or wrist strap.
  9. Has convenient thumb rest covered in grain material which makes it very comfortable to hold.

Cons:

1. To be honest I have found none to speak of. *Some people might not like the removable bridge, but to it is a big positive.

2. Some might want it to weigh a drop more, but to me it is fine the way it is.

Summation:

I find the grip to be very useful and it does its intended job very well with both style and comfort. I think anyone wanting a vertical shutter release and the larger grip will not go wrong with this product.

Canon Printer Profiles

Canon seems to use a numeric system to identify their paper profiles which make it very hard when printing outside their Easy Photo Print EX software. Yesterday I took the time and opened each and every profile to ID what these cryptic numbers mean and made a list of the numbers and what paper they refer to.

My latest acquisitions!

As of yesterday I haven't heard from Dicain regarding the vertical shutter grip for my K100D Super, I don't think I will see it for a while. I was having a few problems regarding printing with my beloved Canon i960. It seems that the color changes from print to print. It seems that if I choose to print two of the same photo, each would be different. I decided after trouble shooting that a new printer was necessary. After doing research I decided that I would purchase a Canon Pro-9000 which prints from 4x6 tp 13x19. After receiving the printer I did a bunch of test shots which were a little dark compared to the screen. After a bunch of prints and adjustments things are good. I really like this printer, but also plan to continue using the i960 as well.

I also ordered two packs of 8.5x11 Canon Photo Paper Pro from Canon on their two for one sale. I also purchased a Tamrac filter case that fits my camera sling bag. Another purchase I made was for a Star effects filter from a vendor on EBay, which has not gotten here from China.
