I had a hard choice as I was working on a limited budget and there were only a few flashes to choose from. My first requirement was it had to be a P-TTL dedicated flash. Next it had to have a power zoom with a lens range of 105mm or more. Also it had to swivel up and down as well as right and left for vertical shots. That last one left the Pentax AF-360 out as it does not swivel right and left. Next it also didn't have as powerful a flash and the 105mm lens range. So after looking around I choose the Sigma EF 530 DG ST which swivels and has the 105mm lens with a range of 174'. I ordered it this morning from B&H, and it should be here either tomorrow or Friday depending if it ships today. I am planning on not having any trouble using it, but who knows as i am not a camera expert.

News to report

The Raynox 250 was a total failure for me, not do to its quality but to my lack of patience. Getting a macro shot hand held like I am accustomed to doing was near but impossible. I decided to cut my losses and sell it to another member of the forum. It was shipped off today and he should have it by Tuesday. I decided to go in another direction which is better lighting for my flower shots, so I ordered a Bower Ring Light similar to the type used by CSI. Not an expensive flash but a defused LED ring of 12 LEDs. This light should serve the purpose very well. Accurate lighting which is well defused is important. I will report on this after I have time to test it. I hope to have it next week early.

What is going on!

Last weekend we went to my daughters home for my grandsons fourth birthday. I have also found that I favor CRV-3 over standard non rechargeable AA batteries. But I have realized that CRV-3 batteries as good as they are are expensive, and the new Low Discharge batteries which have come in to great favor in the photography world is the way to go. Most of these can be charged at least 1,000 times if properly cared for. That means a modern high tech charger which is capable of testing, discharging and conditioning these batteries. I knew that the initial outlay would be expensive, but I had to do it. I ordered a La Crosse BC-900 charger that has a LCD screen for each battery and hold 4 batteries. Each battery is a separate identity and can be charged at different rates. I also purchased 4 Ansmann 2100mph low discharge batteries and a set of 4 Kodak 2100mah low discharge batteries. These new batteries maintain 85% of their charge even after a year on the shelf, so I will always have a charged set waiting to install as needed.

Todays thoughts of products received

Today I received the LumiQuest Soft Screen and tried it out for a few quick shots and found it to work very well. One case in particular comes to mind. I purchased a Benro #66 Carbon Fiber monopod which I like very much. I then purchased and inexpensive Giottos ballhead model MH1304-110c and a cheap plastic quick release. After using it for a while I realized the head and release was to weak for practical use. I was supplied another ball head to try, but this was way to heavy, but great for a tripod. I now ordered a Trek-Tech MagMount head with both light and heavy duty magnets. I am hoping that this unit will be acceptable.

My next item to talk about is how the on-board flash of my K100D Super creates photos with lots of shadows and uneven exposure. I tried using only available light, but didn't approve of the color cast of the photos. I decided to purchase Lumiquest Soft Screen from Adorama which should even out the lighting.

Dicain Vertical Shutter release and grip review

Dicain SG-II Vertical Shutter Release and grip

Many of us purchased our Pentax K100D or K100D Super not only because of the image quality and the reach feature set, but for its size. I preferred a camera that was lighter and easy to carry rather than one of those over sized DSLR's. Soon after getting this camera and getting accustomed to it, I realized that shooting in the portrait position was not only strange but very uncomfortable. I realized now that the extra shutter button and the extra size were very important, and I would not be happy without these items. I also found out that compact size and weight makes a difference when shooting with a long lens and slower shutter speeds. So I was at a cross roads and had to either change cameras which I couldn’t afford, or find a Vertical Shutter release that would work with the K100D Super. After doing a bunch of searches on the Internet I found a few alternatives, but none suited my needs. One contained a battery but no shutter release and another contained both, but was a strange device that fit under the camera and had two exposed wires that plugged into the two jacks on the left of the camera. That was out of the question for both esthetic and practical reasons. The main concern was the door on the camera being to vulnerable to damage when hanging open. While doing my searches I remembered that Dicain (www.dicain.co.kr) made one for the *ist DS series, so I contacted them to ask if one was in the works. I was informed that there was, but it was a few months off. Remembering that Dicain made the cover for my LCD and I was extremely happy with its quality I decided to wait for there version of the vertical shutter release. I have now received the Dicain unit and my impressions are below.

General Information for Dicain SG-II

5.03” Wide (128mm)

2.87” Deep (73mm)

1.53” high (39mm)

3.99 ounces (113g)

First Impressions

My first impressions were that the grip is made out of a good quality material and that the color and texture is a very good match to the finish of the K100D. Even the leather grain looks very good. All in all it looks and feels good and sturdy. The grip adds no real weight to the camera, but does make it feel great in my hands.

Product Review

The unit comes in two pieces, the main unit or grip, and a piece with two male plugs that I call the bridge. The grip installs on the camera to the tripod socket using a thumb wheel which works very well. The main unit or grip contains the button for auto focus and shutter release which works just like the shutter release on the K100D or K100D Super. Half press starts auto focus and full press releases the shutter. In order for the shutter release to work on the grip, the bridge containing the plugs most be inserted. The bridge goes between the remote shutter release jack behind the door on the left of the camera, and the jack on the grip. The bridge completes the circuit between the camera and the grips shutter release. Some people might say why not do it the same way as the SG-1 grip for the *ist DS? The answer is very logical and simple! When the bridge is removed it allows access to the power jack and more important the USB jack. To me this is very important as I use the USB jack as my method to unload photos from the K100D Super. The bridge also covers and protects the door which is exposed to damage as on the Owner User grip. The bridge can be removed when not needed, for those that prefer the grip to remain on the camera and give the pro look.

I was having a few problems regarding printing with my beloved Canon i960. It seems that the color changes from print to print. It seems that if I choose to print two of the same photo, each would be different. I decided after trouble shooting that a new printer was necessary. After doing research I decided that I would purchase a Canon Pro-9000 which prints from 4x6 tp 13x19. After receiving the printer I did a bunch of test shots which were a little dark compared to the screen. After a bunch of prints and adjustments things are good. I really like this printer, but also plan to continue using the i960 as well.

I also ordered two packs of 8.5x11 Canon Photo Paper Pro from Canon on their two for one sale. I also purchased a Tamrac filter case that fits my camera sling bag. I am happy to say that I have found the problem and it turned out to be a memory problem. At least I hope so, as I am pretty confident it is the proper diagnosis. I tested the memory a number of times and it failed, so I ordered a 3gb upgrade kit from www.Crucial.com the complete upgrade cost $61.00 including tax and shipping. I am hopping the parts reach me by Wednesday of next week. Once the upgrade is in I will be able to once again edit my photographs without the system going crazy resulting in a crash and a restore would be required. On November 12 I sent the Amazon dealer a email request for the shipping information and later received a USPS delivery confirmation number. The USPS numbers are not tracking numbers like UPS or FedEx, so there is no way to track the shipment. A week went by and still no package, so I again contacted the company by phone and spoke to the owner who apologized and said he would reship the package again. Later that night I received another tracking number. Another 10 days passed and again no package so again I contacted the company who said they would ship out the package by 2 day air that day. Well that was the 27th and today I received the package. I have no doubt that the Amazon seller had none in stock, so they thought they would delay by saying the shipment was on it's way. You and I know that the USPS is not that inept to loose two packages to the same address. I have no way to prove my theory, but I am glad it has arrived. I will not be evil and give the company a perfect rating, but i will let it pass as all is well now.

On another subject! I have been hunting for a vertical shutter release for my Pentax and haven't found one that meets my requirements until now. The one they make for the DS is very nice, but I am hopping that this one has a USB connection so that I don't have to remove the SD card to off load my pictures, or remove the grip to connect the cable. Only time will tell. I will update this subject as time gets closer to delivery.

Below is a few photos from recent shoots. My next computer will be an iMac 20", but it will have to wait until this system is no longer usable.

What next?

The other day while uploading photos to my gallery my Internet connection went dead, but it turned out to be the Linksys router. Now I choose the least expensive route to fixing this and that was purchase a new router. I bought a Buffalo WHR-HP-G-54, which are very hard to get. My first impressions is that the pack is well made, but the Velcro partitions are a pain to move about. But once they are positioned as I wanted they are fine. I would have liked the movable lens partitions to be easy to open and close as the lenses in the lower compartment might be hard to access. Not a big deal as I am only going to be carrying only the Tamron 18-250 mounted on the camera and the Pentax FA 50mm f1.7 in one lens compartment and the Pentax DA 18-50 in the other compartment. The three additional compartments will remain empty.

Wearing the sling pack is not uncomfortable while on my back. In order to pull the pack to my front to access the inside of the bag requires me to loosen the shoulder strap, which is very easy. Included is a waist belt that I don't see myself using as it is meant for use when on rough terrain or activities like biking. The pack can also be moved to one side making quick shots easy, while maintaining quick access to the inside of the pack. There are additional M.A.S. (Modular Accessory System) products available such as a filter pack and a accessory pocket.

Gear bag ordered

As I have a bad back and suffer when I am on my feet for long periods of time, I needed a gear bag for traveling. I at first thought I would get a belt mounted system, but after a lot of thought and after speaking to my friend who is an Orthopedic Surgeon i decided a sling bag is the only way to go. I ordered the Tamrac Velocity Sling Bag model number 5768 from Calumet Photo. It looks like it will hold my Pentax K100D Super and the Tamron 18-250 mounted on the lens, plus at least two additional lenses. I should have it this some time this week, and I will post my first impressions. The bag will allow me to carry my gear in the back, but swing it to my front in order to get to my camera. My next purchase will be a small case for the front strap to hold filters for quick availability.

I will also have to purchase an additional memory card and the adapter that allows me to transfer my photos to my Archos 504. I am very satisfied with the Monopod and the ball head, but not as much with the Quickonnect as it is about 2 1/2" diameter which makes the unit a little cumbersome. The Benro Monopod is well made and very light, even feels lighter when extended as the weight is spread out. It seemed very steady when held with one hand on the monopod and one hand on the camera. The Ball Head is very nice and easy to use, but I will have to be very aware of the level of the camera, no more than when not using the monopod. I could always add a level to the camera if necessary as they are small and clip into the hot flash bracket.

My next purchase is going to be a carry around camera bag which can hold my Camera with the Tamron 18-250 and one or two additional lenses. I decided to change my filter on my Tamron 18-250 to a circular polarizer, and that is when the problem began. As I was removing the filter and had the lens facing up a bird dropped a huge glob of poop on both the filter and the lens. I quickly ran home to clean the lens as I thought the birds excrement might eat into the coatings of the lens. I used my standard liquid lens cleaner and some lens tissue to gently clean the filter as I didn't want to experiment on the expensive lens. Well all the lens cleaner did was smear the junk around. The next day I attended PDN Photo Plus in NYC and went to both the Hoya & the Tamron booths and asked both what to use to clean the filter and the lens. They both suggested "off the record" that I use Eclipse Lens Cleaner and Pec*Pads to safely clean both. I ordered both as soon as I got home, and prayed that the delay would not do permanent damage to the equipment. I received the package yesterday and proceeded to clean the filter first. In a few minutes the glossy spots on the filter were gone and it looked like there was no permanent damage to the filter. I next held my breath and started to gently clean the surface of the lens. The lens took two pads and only 4 drops of the Eclipse liquid to clean the lens. After cleaning I examined the lens and to my great surprise there was no damage what so ever to the lens. I highly recommend this combination of cleaning materials to all that want to keep there equipment in pristine condition.

I was notified today that my Sima Quick Release was shipped today via FedEx and I guess i should have it in a few days. The Monopod was shipped Airmail from Hong Kong on the 23rd, but that will take a week to 10 days to reach my desk. I will write a mini review on both products.

Equipment Ordered

Between yesterday and today I ordered the following equipment which I feel is necessary for my upcoming European Cruise.
